Leading Worship through music has been a very significant part of my adult life, and it is an activity that has always brought me joy.

My musical training started with piano lessons as a six year-old farm boy in central Illinois and continued as I studied piano at the University of Illinois. After graduating and a brief stint teaching music in the public schools, I earned my CPA certification and spent about 20 years working in public accounting and health care finance; over time my interests shifted and I worked as a software engineer for about 15 years.

A few years ago, I returned to school at KU, earning Master and Doctoral degrees in church music and organ performance.

Over the last forty years I have positions in a variety of churches across the midwest, but Christ Church has become one of the most personally and spiritually rewarding communities I have experienced.

My other big musical interest is the harpsichord and I play regularly with the Kansas City Baroque Consortium and various other chamber ensembles, and give solo recitals throughout the region.   When I’m not practicing or preparing for rehearsals, I can be found in the garden, on my bike, in a kayak, or with my nose buried in a book.

I have been married to my wife, Judith Kooser, for 35 years.  She is now retired from her practice as a radiation oncologist in Topeka.  We have two adult daughters: Amelia works here at Cerner; Johannah teaches music in the public schools in Tacoma, WA.
