Lord, What Are You Doing?

Easter Greetings in Jesus’ name!

“What can I do to help?” That is the most common question I have received since the advent of this coronavirus pandemic, which reveals a lot about our community. There is among us an instinct to serve and bless others. As a pastor, it is wonderful to see, and it is also frustrating because so many of our typical ministry tools are not available to us during this lockdown. However, despite our current limitations, there are things that we can do to be a blessing. Back on March 30 I suggested 4 things:

  • Practice social distancing
  • Pray
  • Pick up the phone and check on people
  • Proclaim the Good News

All of us can do those things and we have a special opportunity right now to proclaim the good news. This coming Tuesday, April 21, begins our online Alpha Course. We already have enough guests signed up for two groups – including some people from out of town. At 2:00pm this afternoon, you’ll receive an email that will serve as an invitation to join this course online. If you haven’t attended Alpha, perhaps this is your chance? In addition, all of us can invite family, friends, and co-workers by simply forwarding them the email invitation. Add a personal note and send it out. Toward the bottom of the email is a registration link, as well as a link to share it on Facebook.

In every situation, we should ask this question – “Lord, what are doing?” The Lord is always at work and this current pandemic is no exception. While there are many examples we could discuss, let’s focus on just one. I haven’t seen data on this yet, but I believe the worldwide lockdown may result in the greatest number of people hearing the Gospel that has ever occurred. First, think about the fact that many people are at home looking for things to do. In addition, a time of crisis always opens some people up to God. We certainly saw this right after 9/11. Then consider that thousands and thousands of churches, from all over the world, have been sending out videos and livestreaming services weekly. People are forwarding these videos to family and friends, as well as sharing them on social media.

So, let’s take advantage of this unique time by inviting people to ask their questions and hear the good news of Jesus Christ through Alpha Online! Let’s participate in what God is doing!

God is good and you are amazing people. I love you and miss you. Keep your eyes on our risen Lord who says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

Blessings,
Patrick
